2. This is an example of a environmental portrait. In this picture there are hikers who seem to be hiking.
3. Some other types of photography portraits are:
-Candid Portrait where the subject is unaware of the picture being taken (not posed).
-Formal Portrait where everything thing is planned such as outfits
-Couple Portrait where as a connection between two people such as mother and child etc.
4. For portraits you must remember that the lighting is key. If you see shadows then you might want to change the lighting if not shoot away!

More than just tying the background into the picture, it is showing the subject(s) in an environment in which they live or work such as showing the firefighter in his/her gear on a fire engine ... (but not putting him/her in mountain climbing gear if that's not what he does.)
The surroundings say something about the subject.
